Smart Irrigation Makes All the Difference in Hot Weather

Summer is the season when your landscape is most active — and most vulnerable. Plants, lawns, and gardens require consistent and efficient watering to stay green and healthy with higher temperatures and longer days. However, not all watering methods are created equally.

At Cole Landscaping, we help homeowners implement irrigation strategies that match their landscape’s unique layout, usage, and needs — from in-ground sprinkler systems to precision drip irrigation and targeted container watering. When done right, irrigation supports long-term plant health, saves water, and keeps your outdoor space looking its best all season long.

Regular Watering: Foundation of a Healthy Lawn

A traditional sprinkler system or regular hose-and-spray routine provides essential hydration for larger lawns and open turf areas. However, the key isn’t just to water — it’s to water correctly.

Here’s how:

  • Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation loss
  • Aim for deep, infrequent watering to promote stronger root growth

  • Avoid shallow, daily watering — it can lead to weak roots and a higher risk of disease

Whether automated or manual, a regular watering schedule ensures consistent moisture that helps your lawn bounce back from foot traffic, sun exposure, and summer heat stress.

Drip Irrigation: Efficient Water Where It’s Needed Most

For planted beds, garden zones, or areas with dense foliage, drip irrigation is one of the most effective and water-conscious solutions.

Benefits of drip irrigation include:

  • Delivers water directly to the plant roots
  • Reduces evaporation and runoff

  • Minimizes weed growth by limiting moisture to target areas

  • Ideal for foundation plantings, vegetable gardens, and perennial beds

Cole Landscaping installs and maintains drip systems customized to your planting layout, ensuring every zone gets the attention it needs without wasting water.

Container Watering: Don’t Forget the Pots!

Planters and container gardens add visual interest and flexibility to your yard, but they dry out quickly and often require more frequent care. That’s why container-specific watering is essential to a complete irrigation plan.

Tips for container watering:

  • Use self-watering pots or install micro-drip lines to maintain moisture
  • In peak heat, check containers daily — especially small or unglazed pots

  • Consider grouping containers by water needs for more efficient care

We help clients manage container arrangements with practical watering solutions that protect plant health and reduce daily maintenance.

Why It Matters

Proper irrigation isn’t just about keeping things green — it plays a significant role in:

  • Plant health & disease resistance
  • Water conservation and utility savings

  • Curb appeal and long-term property value

Even better, upgrading or adjusting your irrigation system can often be done with minimal disruption and noticeable improvement.

Expert Help, Customized Solutions

Every yard is different, and your irrigation plan should be, too. At Cole Landscaping, we design, install, and maintain systems that work with your landscape’s layout and lifestyle. We cover your watering needs from full-property sprinkler systems to drip upgrades and smart controller integrations.

Innovative design strategies to turn your yard into a personal escape.

With warmer days approaching, now’s the time to turn your outdoor space into a place you’ll use — and love. At Cole Landscaping, we help homeowners create custom pool environments and integrated water features that deliver comfort and elegance.

Whether planning for serene relaxation, family fun, or stunning visual impact, a well-designed pool area can elevate your yard beyond just function. Here’s how custom pools and water features can transform your backyard into a summer retreat.

Designed Around Your Lifestyle

The best pools aren’t just installed — they’re planned. A custom pool design ensures your space complements how you live. Maybe you’re dreaming of a sleek lap pool with minimal lines, or a lagoon-style setup that winds through lush landscaping. No matter your vision, Cole Landscaping’s design team works with your property’s layout, elevation, and usage goals to create something that fits your home and lifestyle.

We take into account:

  • How the pool will connect to patios, decks, or outdoor kitchens
  • The flow of people around and through the space
  • How natural light and shade interact throughout the day

By blending beauty and utility, your pool becomes the centerpiece of your outdoor experience, not just a standalone feature.

Water Features That Add Personality and Peace

Looking to go beyond basic? Integrated water features provide the sights and sounds that make a pool area feel complete. These include:

  • Waterfalls and spillover spas that add sound, texture, and movement
  • Bubblers and jets for a playful, modern accent
  • Decorative fountains that make your yard visually stand out

These features do more than enhance your design. They introduce soothing soundscapes, create motion in the water, and bring your space to life even when you’re not swimming. With low-voltage lighting, your water features can extend your enjoyment into the evening with a resort-worthy ambiance.

Relaxation and Entertainment — Built In

A custom pool gives you more than just a way to cool off. It’s a personal escape — a place to unwind after work, reconnect with family, or host friends on summer weekends. With the right design, it becomes the natural heart of your backyard.

You can:

  • Lounge poolside while the sound of water masks neighborhood noise
  • Host a cookout with seamless flow between patio, pool, and fire pit
  • Let kids swim while adults unwind in a spillover spa nearby

This kind of space encourages time outdoors, supports health and wellness, and turns your yard into an extension of your home.

Increased Curb Appeal and Home Value

Aside from the lifestyle benefits, a well-planned poolscape can add value to your home. It gives your property a polished, elevated look and often becomes a significant selling point. Whether you’re planning to sell in the future or just want to invest in your home, a custom pool with water features signals quality, care, and luxury.

  • Design consultations tailored to your property
  • Permitting and compliance
  • Installation of pools, spas, and all water systems

Smart design strategies to achieve beauty, balance, and ease in your outdoor space.

Creating a breathtaking landscape doesn’t have to mean endless weekends spent weeding, pruning, and watering.

With thoughtful design choices and the right plants, you can enjoy a stunning outdoor space that practically takes care of itself — giving you more time to relax and less time managing yardwork.

At Cole Landscaping, we specialize in designing elegant, low-maintenance landscapes that maximize beauty while minimizing upkeep. Here’s how smart planning can deliver a yard you’ll love year-round — without the extra work.

Smart Plant Selection for Effortless Beauty

Choosing the right plants is the foundation of a low-maintenance landscape.
Instead of high-maintenance varieties that require constant care, we focus on:

  • Native Plants: Naturally adapted to the local climate, native species require less water, fewer fertilizers, and minimal pest control.
  • Perennials Over Annuals: Perennial plants return year after year, eliminating the need for seasonal replanting and saving time and effort.
  • Drought-Tolerant Choices: Incorporating plants that thrive with minimal watering supports sustainability while cutting down on your irrigation needs.

By selecting resilient, well-suited plants, you create a landscape that flourishes naturally — and frees you from constant maintenance.

Hardscaping: The Secret Weapon of Low-Maintenance Design

Hardscaping — the use of stone, brick, gravel, and other non-plant materials — plays a key role in reducing yard upkeep.

Smart hardscaping elements include:

  • Patios and Walkways: Stylish, functional spaces that eliminate large lawn areas and reduce mowing and edging.
  • Retaining Walls: Help manage slopes and drainage naturally, minimizing erosion and replanting needs.
  • Rock Gardens and Decorative Gravel: Add texture and beauty while replacing sections that would otherwise require watering and mowing.

Integrating hardscape features not only lowers maintenance but also elevates the overall design of your outdoor space.

Mulching for Moisture Retention and Weed Control

A simple yet highly effective tool, mulch dramatically cuts down on watering and weeding:

  • Moisture Retention: Mulch helps soil stay cool and damp, reducing the need for frequent irrigation.
  • Weed Suppression: A thick layer of mulch blocks sunlight, preventing weed seeds from germinating.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Mulch adds a polished, cohesive look to garden beds and plantings.

At Cole Landscaping, we use premium organic mulch that not only enhances plant health but also integrates seamlessly with the overall landscape design.

Design Layouts That Minimize Effort

Beyond plant and material choices, thoughtful landscape layout can dramatically impact maintenance needs.

Key low-maintenance layout strategies include:

  • Group Plantings by Watering Needs: Reduce irrigation complexity by placing similar plants together.
  • Simplify Lawn Areas: Limit expansive lawns to strategic spots for recreation, using ground covers or hardscapes elsewhere.
  • Opt for Wider Beds and Natural Shapes: Curved garden beds are easier to maintain and allow for better plant growth compared to rigid, narrow borders.

By thinking ahead about how you’ll interact with your landscape, we create designs that are both beautiful and easy to live with.

Achieve Effortless Outdoor Living with Cole Landscaping

At Cole Landscaping, we believe a beautiful outdoor space should be a source of joy — not a never-ending chore list.
Our expert team combines smart plant selection, elegant hardscaping, and thoughtful design to create landscapes that are as easy to care for as they are stunning to experience.

Tech-driven tools that make your landscape greener, smarter, and easier to manage

Today’s homeowners want more from their landscapes. They want beauty, sustainability, and simplicity without spending every weekend weeding, watering, or guessing what their plants need. That’s where smart landscaping comes in.

At Cole Landscaping, we believe the future of outdoor living is not just about aestheticism about combining nature with innovation. From intelligent irrigation systems to solar-powered lighting and plant-monitoring sensors, we help clients create landscapes that are efficient, low-maintenance, and environmentally friendly.

Here’s how smart landscaping is changing the game—and how Cole Landscaping can help you get ahead of the curve.

  1. Smarter Watering with Intelligent Irrigation Systems

Water is one of your landscape’s most important (and costly) resources. Traditional watering methods often lead to overuse, runoff, or under-watering—none of which support a healthy garden.

Smart irrigation systems solve that.

These systems:

  • Adjust automatically based on weather and soil conditions
  • Deliver water exactly when and where it’s needed
  • Reduce waste by up to 50% compared to traditional sprinklers

At Cole Landscaping, we design and install customized smart irrigation systems for every property we service—whether it’s a small residential garden or a multi-acre estate. The result? Thriving plants, healthier lawns, and lower utility bills.

  1. Let the Sun Do the Work with Solar Landscape Lighting

Lighting transforms a landscape—but running electrical lines and watching the energy bill climb? Not so much.

That’s why more of our clients are switching to solar-powered lighting.

These fixtures:

  • Charge during the day and light up automatically at night
  • Require no wiring and minimal maintenance
  • Come in stylish options that fit any garden design

Whether it’s pathway lights, accent lights, or uplighting for trees, our team integrates solar solutions that are both functional and eco-friendly—adding ambiance and security without increasing your carbon footprint.

  1. Stay Connected with Plant Health Monitoring Tools

You don’t have to be a botanist to keep your plants thriving—you just need the right tools. With modern apps and smart sensors, it’s easier than ever to monitor your garden’s health in real-time.

These technologies can:

  • Track moisture, pH levels, and sunlight exposure
  • Send alerts when your plants need water or nutrients
  • Help you prevent issues before they become costly problems

At Cole Landscaping, we offer guidance on selecting and integrating these tools into your garden setup—especially helpful for clients managing larger gardens, vegetable plots, or specialty plants that require extra care.

Why Smart Landscaping Is the Future

Sustainable landscaping isn’t just a trend—it’s the future of outdoor living. Homeowners today are more environmentally conscious, time-strapped, and tech-savvy than ever before. Smart landscaping offers:

  • Efficiency – Less time managing, more time enjoying
  • Sustainability – Lower water usage, fewer chemicals, and greener practices
  • Peace of mind – Knowing your yard is working with you, not against you

Whether you’re starting from scratch or upgrading an existing setup, Cole Landscaping is here to bring your vision to life—with the perfect balance of nature and technology.

Let’s Design Your Smart Landscape Together

At Cole Landscaping, we don’t just install gardens—we create outdoor experiences that evolve with you. Our team combines deep horticultural knowledge with the latest in landscape technology to ensure your yard is stunning, sustainable, and easy to maintain.

Drip irrigation has become a cornerstone of modern landscaping, offering a precise, water-efficient solution for residential and commercial gardens. Whether you are cultivating a vibrant flower bed or maintaining an expansive estate, this method can transform the way you care for your landscape. Let us delve into what makes drip irrigation so effective and why it is an excellent choice for landscapes in Hamilton, Wenham, Danvers, Boxford, Georgetown, and beyond.

What Is Drip Irrigation?

Drip irrigation is a watering system that delivers water directly to the roots of plants in a slow, controlled manner. Using tubes equipped with emitters, water is applied drop by drop, minimizing runoff and evaporation. Unlike traditional sprinklers, which often waste water due to wind and overspray, drip irrigation ensures every drop counts.

This precision watering system is ideal for flower beds, vegetable gardens, trees, shrubs, and areas with uneven terrain. By targeting the root zones, it promotes healthy plant growth while conserving water, an increasingly important consideration in today’s environmentally conscious world.

Benefits of Drip Irrigation

  1. Water Conservation: Drip irrigation systems are highly efficient, using 30 to 50 percent less water compared to conventional sprinkler systems. The slow application minimizes evaporation and runoff, ensuring plants receive just the right amount of moisture.
  2. Healthier Plants: By delivering water directly to the roots, drip irrigation prevents overwatering, which can lead to root rot and plant diseases. It also reduces leaf wetness, a common culprit of fungal infections.
  3. Adaptability to Different Landscapes: Whether you are working with slopes, sandy soil, or clay, drip irrigation systems can be customized to suit the specific needs of your property. Subsurface installations are also available for areas requiring extra protection against surface activity.
  4. Time Savings: With programmable timers, drip irrigation systems require minimal manual intervention. They handle the watering schedule for you, giving you more time to enjoy your landscape.
  5. Cost-Effective in the Long Run: While the initial investment might be higher, the reduced water bills and healthier plants make drip irrigation a cost-effective solution over time.

Components of a Drip Irrigation System

A typical drip irrigation setup includes:

  • Mainline Tubing: Carries water from the source to the emitters.
  • Emitters: Release water in controlled amounts directly to plants.
  • Filters: Prevent debris from clogging the system.
  • Pressure Regulators: Ensure consistent water pressure for efficient operation.
  • Timers: Automate the watering schedule for convenience and consistency.

Choosing the Right Drip Irrigation System

Cole Landscaping offers tailored drip irrigation solutions to meet the unique needs of each property. Whether you need surface or subsurface systems, we ensure a tangle-free installation and provide ongoing maintenance to keep your system running optimally. From rotary sprinklers for lawns to drip emitters for shrubs, our team selects the right tools for your plants.

Winter sowing offers a unique and efficient way to start a garden even during the colder months. By leveraging the natural freeze-thaw cycles of winter, you can prepare hardy seedlings ready to flourish as soon as spring arrives. If you are wondering whether it is too late to winter sow, the answer often depends on your location, gardening zone, and the type of seeds you are working with. Let us explore this rewarding gardening method and how you can still start winter sowing successfully.

What Is Winter Sowing?

Winter sowing is a technique where seeds are planted outdoors in miniature greenhouses made from repurposed containers. These containers, such as milk jugs, soda bottles, or clear food clamshells, are filled with soil and placed outside to endure the winter weather. As the seasons change, the seeds naturally germinate when conditions are optimal, eliminating the need for indoor grow lights or heat mats.

This method is particularly suited for hardy annuals, perennials, and vegetables that thrive in cooler temperatures. By the time spring arrives, you will have robust seedlings ready for transplanting.

Why Choose Winter Sowing?

Winter sowing is an accessible and low-cost way to start a garden. Some key benefits include:

  • Ease of Use: There is no need for indoor setups or special equipment. Nature does the work for you.
  • Space-Saving: Containers remain outdoors, freeing up valuable indoor space.
  • Water Efficiency: Snow and rain provide natural moisture for the seeds.
  • Hardier Seedlings: Plants are naturally acclimated to outdoor conditions, making them stronger and more resilient.
Preventative measure to protect winter landscape

At Cole Landscaping, we provide guidance and inspiration to help you succeed with projects like winter sowing. While this is a fantastic do-it-yourself opportunity, we also recognize that some gardening goals might benefit from professional planning or design. Winter sowing, however, is a fun and fulfilling task for those who enjoy rolling up their sleeves.

Can You Start Winter Sowing Now?

If you are in the middle of winter or even approaching early spring, there is still time to begin winter sowing. Hardy annuals and perennials benefit the most from this method and can often be sown up until March, depending on your gardening zone. Seeds that require cold stratification, a process where exposure to cold helps break seed dormancy, are ideal for later-season winter sowing.

Look for these phrases on seed packets to determine suitability:

  • “Cold-hardy”
  • “Direct sow in early spring”
  • “Requires stratification”
  • “Withstands frost”

Steps to Start Winter Sowing

Follow these simple steps to set up your winter sowing containers:

  • Choose Suitable Seeds: Select cold-hardy annuals, perennials, or vegetables.
    • Examples include coneflower, black-eyed Susan, snapdragon, and leafy greens like kale or spinach.
  • Prepare Containers: Use clear or semi-transparent containers with lids. Cut drainage holes in the bottom and create vents in the lid for airflow.
  • Add Soil: Fill each container with 3-4 inches of potting soil or seed-starting mix. Lightly moisten the soil before planting.
  • Plant Seeds: Scatter seeds on the soil surface and cover lightly with soil, following the depth instructions on the seed packet.
  • Secure the Containers: Close the containers and seal the edges with duct tape. Remove caps from bottles to allow ventilation.
  • Place Outside: Position the containers in a sunny spot outdoors, away from heavy wind or flooding areas. Nature will take care of the rest.

Monitoring Your Winter Sown Seeds

Once the containers are set up, they require minimal maintenance. Check occasionally to ensure the soil remains moist. If the weather is particularly dry, add a small amount of water. Snow cover is beneficial, as it provides insulation and moisture.

As spring approaches, watch for signs of germination. When seedlings emerge, increase ventilation by opening the containers slightly during the day. This prevents overheating and prepares the seedlings for eventual transplanting.

Heat Stress can do a number on your yard. What can you do?

For most of us, summer is not a season of stress. For lawns though, it is. Consistent hot and dry weather over a long period of time can lead to heat or moisture stress. This can cause your lawn to turn brown and even invite a variety of weeds and pests. To keep your lawn at its best and limit the hot summer damage, you should familiarize yourself with some of the basics of this issue.

Signs of Heat Stress on Lawn

On the bright side, heat stress is not that difficult to identify. Early on, your lawn may need a drink if footprints remain on the grass hours after walking on it or if the grass appears discolored. It usually turns gray or a darker shade of green before going brown.

When the effects of stress start to substantially impact your turf, grass blades may curl or turn brown at the tips. If you notice brown patches throughout your yard, this could actually be the result of a variety of different problems. All of these issues are worsened by drought.

Possible Underlying Issues

  • If the lawn in these areas can be lifted up like a carpet, you may have a grub infestation since these insect larvae eat at the grass roots.
  • Push a screwdriver into your lawn. If it becomes difficult and does not go in smoothly, the lawn needs moisture and aeration.
  • A brown lawn could also be the result of chinch bugs or other surface feeding insects.

In all of these cases, your lawn will experience great difficulty taking in the nutrients it needs. If you notice any of these signs in your yard during the hot summer months, it would be wise to take precautions against heat stress.

Treating Stressed Grass

  • Don’t compact the soil. If your lawn experiences a lot of foot traffic or heavy mowing equipment, your soil will become compacted. Then it will be difficult for air to get to the roots. If your lawn suffers from this problem, you’ll need to aerate in order to relieve the stress.
  • Water deeply, but not often. Watering lightly every day will produce shallow roots that won’t be equipped to handle hot and dry weather very well. Your lawn should receive 1/3 an inch of water every other day in order to remain strong and drought-resistant. Water in the morning to avoid the afternoon’s high evaporation rates and the possible fungus risks your lawn could face if irrigated at night. Shoot for 6-10 am.
  • Adjust fertilizer applications to avoid damage. In high stress periods, light applications will keep your lawn healthy or assist in recovery. Check periodically for signs of fungus and schedule a treatment as soon as possible.
  • If the drought is severe enough, let it go dormant. In conditions when the heat is just too much for your grass to overcome, it will essentially shut down until cool, moist weather returns. During this condition, you should irrigate your lawn at least once per week.
  • If you have a newly-planted lawn, don’t let it go dormant. Every rule has an exception. Allowing new turf to dry up and die can have crippling long term effects. Since it has shallow roots it may not be able to recover from extreme stress. It is critical to keep up with irrigation. Also refrain from compacting the soil in order to keep these lawns alive and well.

Relief from Heat Stress will come in the Fall

When autumn comes, your lawn should begin to recover from heat stress. Keeping up with seasonal lawn care is an essential part of maintaining healthy grass and can produce a wonderful lawn if performed correctly.

If you need help caring for a lawn in distress, one of our lawn care professionals will be happy to assist you. Contact Cole for your free consultation.

Garden Care

FIne garden with beautiful lawn, trees and perennials

Did You Know?

What do you know about Fine Garden Care? A Fine Gardener’s singular goal is to vigilantly care for the soil, plants, and design compositions viewed through the lens of a dynamic natural system. This means that we must look at the garden with the eyes of a trainer and a caretaker. Consequently, we ask, “How can we make this perform better, look better, and be healthier?”

For Fine Garden Care, our goal is to nurture both plants and soil to achieve high performance over time. Primarily, that performance is connected to ecological health. However, it is also tethered to the presentation of the garden. It is also important that the presentation pleases the garden owner.  Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it lives on a continuum of expression stretching from formal order to wild order. It is up to the Fine Gardener and landowner to determine where on the continuum the landscape will live.

To this end, the Fine Gardener will make changes and subtle shifts within gardens, keeping the original design intent in mind. While doing so, they will keep a firm watch on the evolution of plants and how that affects the space and its uses over time.

Cole Landscape specializes in partnered Fine Gardening Landscape Care with homeowners. Partnering enables us to supply care at the level best suited for you and your landscape. It also enables us to dovetail our specialties with our other landscape services that we are currently providing for you.

Fine Gardening requires the regular consideration of the following six areas of management. Do not leave any of them out or else your landscape risks deterioration into chaos. Here is what you can expect from our team during your time block.

  1. Edging Beds

Cut lawn edges to demarcate planting beds and lawn areas; keep the lawn from spreading into what it considers empty spaces. In some cases, perennials and groundcovers want to return the favor and spread into lawn spaces. The goal is a healthy cohabitation without invasion so that there is a neat edge with a well-shaped flow that draws your eye through the landscape in a gentle and pleasing way.

  2. Pruning Woody Ornamental Plants

We prune trees and shrubs at the appropriate time in their growth cycles. Not all plants can or should be pruned at the same time, so be aware that spring, summer, and fall pruning needs are different. There are times when we will suggest that plants be pruned in the wintertime as well. Additionally, all plant types are not pruned in the same way. Understanding horticultural differences is critical in getting this job done right.

  3. Deadheading/Dividing/Transplanting/Removal

Gardens mature and age over time at different paces. As a consequence, plants may need varying attention over the seasons as they mature and respond to seasonal fluctuations. Light pruning and deadheading of herbaceous plants (like perennials) are necessary as these plants move through their normal flowering cycle. Older, more mature plants may need heavier-handed attention if they become too big or are no longer performing well in a particular location. Dividing and transplanting perennials that have outgrown their current space can make more room in the old location and provide an additional plants to utilize in other, open areas. Moving out shrubs to make more room and fill new spaces can be extremely effective in getting more performance out of an area and the plants in that garden. Most often we perform this kind of work in the spring and fall.

  4. General Weed & Bed Management

Weeding is a necessary “evil” that should not be avoided. Good bed management also means managing moss and overly aggressive perennials and woody plants that are seeding themselves in the landscape. Primarily, the goal is to keep the garden managed. You need to prevent undesirable plants from getting a foothold in the soil or, worse, entangled in the root systems of the desirable plants. If you skip weeding, you ensure that the problem will increase. This is because weeds also have a flowering and seed setting cycle (just like the desirable plants). When they are left unchecked, those weeds repopulate the soil with more seeds to germinate in the next season and many seasons thereafter. It takes only one seeding to create weeds for several years to come.

  5. Soil Health & Remediation

Soils deficient in organic matter, minerals, and/or nutrients should be treated to improve conditions for plants. It may be necessary to apply lime applications in the fall to improve the vitality and performance of ornamental garden areas. We recommend soil testing  to understand the soil chemistry more fully. As as result we can determine appropriate fertilization programs as well as more steps for soil remediation. Simply adding fertilizer on a yearly basis is not only ineffective, but it can also be costly. We suggest organic compost for use with all plantings/transplanting. We also recommend organic mulches – simple undyed bark and/or leaf mold – as a follow-up to all the above work. Balanced soils help reduce or eliminate moss, yellowed leaves, insect predation, and at times even helps reduce weeds. Most important, healthy soils have a better chance of supporting plants through times of drought.

  6. Watering Strategies

Proper hydration is one of the key ingredients for a healthy landscape. First of all, proper hydration promotes healthy soil. Secondly, it supports the right plants in the right places. Thirdly, it helps provide adequate acclimation time for new plants. Plants should only be moved if the homeowner is able to reliably monitor and water them. It should be noted that irrigation systems are not adequate for watering transplants. They also should not be set and left unchecked – this is a root cause of much of our seasonal water shortages. It is important to be aware of factors that may impede proper hydration, such as competition from trees, overcrowded plantings, and areas over-exposed to the elements, to name a few. If this is the case, a change in plant care strategy may be necessary.

There is still time to protect your landscape for healthy growth next spring!

Protect your landscape this winter. Extreme weather can take a toll on your landscape plants. Every spring, we unfortunately see plants that have been hit by a tough winter discover and discover the damage it can cause to trees and shrubs. Fortunately, there are steps you can do now to prepare plants for what’s coming.

Extreme cold isn’t the only challenge faced by woody plants; in fact, plants hardy to your region should endure normal winter temperatures just fine. However, winter can wreak havoc in other ways.

Early cold spells can damage plant tissues that haven’t had a chance to harden off for the winter.

  • Dry winds and winter sun can dry out or “burn” conifer needles and broadleaf evergreen foliage, which continue to transpire (give off water vapor) during winter.
  • Frozen soil means plants can’t take up water to replace the moisture lost from evaporation and transpiration.
  • Midwinter thaws can “fool” plants into breaking dormancy too early, and the tender new growth may be killed by the next cold snap.
  • Alternating freeze/thaw cycles can heave new plants out of the ground, leaving roots exposed to drying wind and sun.
  • Bright winter sun heats up dark tree bark, which can freeze and crack when temperatures drop quickly at sunset.
  • Deer, mice, rabbits and other animals gnaw bark and browse leaves and twigs when other food becomes scarce during long, cold winters.

Although wet, heavy snow can damage branches, snow cover is usually good for plants. A layer of snow provides moisture and helps insulate the soil and roots from fluctuating temperatures.

Preventative measure to protect winter landscape
Protect delicate plantings on your landscape from harsh winter weather

If you have Deciduous Trees and Shrubs

Mature trees and shrubs that are hardy in your region need no extra protection. However, young and newly planted trees and shrubs benefit from some extra TLC:

  • Because plant roots may not have ventured very far into the native soil, it’s especially important to water newly planted trees and shrubs thoroughly into fall, until the ground freezes.
  • Once the ground is frozen, apply a 3″ to 4″ layer of insulating mulch, such as bark mulch or pine straw, around the base of the plant. This helps insulate the soil so it stays frozen and helps prevent heaving. Keep the mulch several inches away from the trunk to prevent rot and discourage rodent chewing.
  • Tender young bark is easily damaged by gnawing mice and rabbits. Protect the trunks of young trees — especially fruit trees — with tree guards made of plastic or wire.
  • The bark of young trees is also susceptible to sunscald. Paint the south side of the trunk with a solution of diluted white interior latex paint or wrap the trunk with paper tree wrap. This also helps prevent frost cracks, which occur when dark-colored bark heats up on a sunny winter day and then rapidly cools at night.

If you have Conifers and Broadleaf Evergreens

Trees and shrubs that remain green — conifers and broadleaf evergreens, such as rhododendrons — slow their growth but never go fully dormant. It’s especially important that they have a ready supply of water whenever the ground isn’t frozen.

  1. Drying winter winds are especially damaging to evergreens. In exposed, windy areas, erecting a windbreak helps prevent damage, as can wrapping shrubs with burlap.
  2. If branches are bending under the weight of a heavy snowfall, gently remove some of the snow. However, don’t try to remove ice after an ice storm; you’re likely to cause more harm than good.
  3. Some evergreens, notably white pines, are susceptible to damage by road salt sprayed onto branches by passing snowplows. In spring, you’ll see brown needles on the road-facing side of the tree. Protect hedges and shrubs with burlap or shrub wraps. On taller trees, there is little you can do; consider replanting with more salt-tolerant species.
  4. Keep deer from browsing on hedges and shrubs by wrapping them with burlap or shrub wraps.

Winter Pruning

Pruning is an essential part of plant care, but you must take care to prune at the correct time of year. Some plants require winter pruning when they’re dormant. This prepares your plants to focus on growing flowers and fruit when they emerge in the spring. It also maintains a healthy shape and reduces the risk of diseases taking over.

Some of the plants to put on your winter pruning to do list should include:  grapevines, autumn-fruiting raspberries, figs, wisteria, roses, apple and pear trees, deciduous shrubs, and multiple fruit bushes – such as blueberries, gooseberries, or red currants.

Your goal with your winter pruning of fruit bushes is to remove old wood and create the best shape. Doing so leaves behind the healthy, young branches to produce large harvests each year

A Fungus Among Us?

Red Thread is one of the most common fungal patch diseases found on lawns during these warm summer months. Other lawn funguses commonly found in turf grasses in New England during this time of year are Pythium and Dollar Spot.

Although it may appear unsightly, the good news is there are several disease-control options available. The best thing you can do for a diseased lawn is to aerate and nourish the soil beneath the turf.

Aeration Heals Your Lawn’s Wounds

First, start with proper lawn aeration to ensure that the lawn breathes. Aeration loosens impacted soil and enhances new growth after broadcast seeding. Broadcast seeding coupled with a top-dressing of our own “Black Gold” organic compost is the most cost-effective approach to correcting the problem that “mother nature” has created.  Broadcast Seeding and fertilization enhances new growth by 200% and ensures bare spots grow in.

What is Red Thread?

Red Thread has been running rampant on the North Shore this season. This lawn fungus appears in turf as small pinkish-red spots or patches, usually when temps are high, and humidity is higher. Infected areas eventually turn light tan, and the leaf tips or margins may be covered with fine pink to red threads, giving the turf an overall pink coloration.

Red Thread takes its name from the antler like structures produced by a fungus (Laetisaria fuciformis) on the tips of its blade.  Generally, it is most severe and may cause significant damage to both perennial ryegrass and creeping red fescue. Red thread usually presents itself during warm summer temperatures. We see it most often when there is prolonged high relative humidity, dense fog or overcast skies which commonly occurs this time of year.

Symptoms of Red Thread

The infected grass will firstly be ‘bleached’ in color; the grass will turn pale cream/white. Not all grass blades will be affected, as non-infected blades may exist next to infected blades. In these circumstances the grass will appear visibly messy. In moist conditions the fungus will form the pink branching threads. Once the threads are well developed the lawn will have reddish/pinkish tinge to it in small patches, these patches may join together to form larger patches.

Treating Red Thread

First you should have your lawn evaluated and diagnosed by a professional who will identify and address your lawn’s needs. If your lawn has become infected with a fungus, there are two major ways to treat.

The first method is to allow your lawn, and the fungus, to grow out. We apply Triple 19 (19-19-19 – basic lawn fertilizer) to help the lawn with the process. This method is easier, but it takes a considerable amount of time for the lawn to grow out.

The second method is more intense, but it is quicker and more effective. Fungicide, a type of chemical, is applied to the infected area. A good approach to controlling or eliminating Red thread is having your lawn treated with the proper Fungicide. Often times it takes 2 applications of fungicide per year to help your lawn get through the season. Once your lawn has been treated, water deeply and consistently twice weekly.

When to Water your Lawn

It’s best to water your lawn early in the morning or early evening. Never water at night – it makes grass susceptible to disease.

Red Thread Lawn Fungus on the move!

The thing you need to remember is that most turf fungus is NOT a major concern. It will go away on its own with proper care. The first line of defense is aeration with compost top-dressing and broadcast seeding to rejuvenate and add missing nutrients to your soil. Secondly, timely fertilizer and fungicide applications will ensure the health of your lawn throughout the entire growing season. The third component to ensure a lush lawn is keeping up with weekly maintenance, such as a regular irrigation schedule and consistent mowing.

If you are seeing anything that looks like Red Thread on your turf, and you are not currently on our fertilization program, please let us know!   The sooner the lawn is treated the better the outcome.
